Qurb: The Music of Anouar Brahem (Presented by Brooklyn Maqam)

Barbes, 376 9th Street, Brooklyn, NY 11215

Qurb - The Music of Anouar Brahem The music of Tunisian composer and oudist Anouar Brahem is poetic, often wistfully meditative yet sparkling with energy. Surprisingly, his music is rarely performed by others, aside from a couple of his most well-known compositions. Qurb is an ensemble formed to explore his wide repertoire of compositions that are seldom heard, with musicians who all share his love of both traditional Arabic music and the expressive potential of jazz.

Featuring:

Brian Prunka — oud

Gideon Forbes — saxophone, clarinet, nay

John Murchison — bass

Alber Baseel — percussion

Brooklyn Maqam is an organization dedicated to presenting Middle Eastern (in particular, Arabic) music, with the goals of expanding its audience, preserving it as an art form, and building community centered around the music.
